Tens Units

TENS is a safe, easy to use and drug free method of pain relief used by hospital pain clinics and in physiotherapy since the 1960's. TENS is an abbreviation of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation.

The TENS Unit is a small battery operated box which produces pain relieving electrical pulses. Either 2 or 4 self adhesive electrodes are applied to the skin and attached to the TENS unit with lead wires.

The tiny pulses are then passed from the TENS unit, via the lead wires and electrodes, so that they are applied to the nerves which lie underneath the skin surface. The electrodes are normally positioned over, or around, the area of pain but other more advanced applications may often prove better - these are fully described in 'TENS - The User's Guide To Pain Relief - a systematic approach' which was written by TENS Specialist Keith Tippey.

OBS200

It is recommended that you start to use this TENS device at least 14 days before the baby is due. This enables you to gain confidence in its use and can help relieve the lower back pain common to women in the latter stages of pregnancy.

The device provides two pulse strengths depending upon your requirements. The first is a rhythmic pulse which helps to stimulate the bodys own natural pain killers, endorphins and enkephalins. The second is a stronger boost pulse which should be used at the beginning of a contraction to block the passage of pain to the brain.

TENS can reduce the need for other forms of pain relief such as Pethidine and Epidural Anaesthetic. It can still be used with other methods such as Gas and Air (Entonox). TENS is a favourite for those wishing for a natural birth - it gives you the opportunity to move around and is not restrictive.

  • Features and Benefits:
  • Two pulse strengths selected via a simple hand switch
  • Ability to use 2 or 4 electrodes
  • Specifically designed for pain relief during labour
  • Effective pain relief for other types of pain including post natally
  • Robust, compact and light weight
  • 5 year guarantee
